Veselka, the Ukrainian diner on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, is one of the few restaurants in the city that truly deserves to be called venerable, even iconic. Veselka has also become a center for New York’s support for embattled Ukrainians, as shown in Michael Fiore’s new documentary, “Veselka: The Rainbow on the Corner at the Center of the World.” (David Duchovny narrates.) Veselka’s third-generation proprietor, Jason Birchard, is of Ukrainian ancestry, and many of the staff are from the country as well. The film (in theaters now) starts as a fun story about a New York institution, and its tone is resolutely hopeful and convivial. I wrote about “Navalny,” Daniel Roher’s Oscar-winning documentary that covers his opposition to Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, and thought of other films that help illuminate the war in Ukraine years into the struggle.

In just 15 days, Kenwood Allen killed four people, prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office said on Wednesday. Mr. Allen, 33, was already charged late last year after prosecutors said he was part of a criminal operation that targeted people emerging from bars on Manhattan’s Lower East Side after a long night out. Prosecutors said that he would drug victims with fentanyl and other opioids before stealing their credit cards and other valuables, often leaving them unconscious on the street. On Wednesday, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, said that further investigation had revealed the full breadth of Mr. Allen’s criminal operation. He was also charged with 17 counts of robbery and attempted robbery.

ON THE CASE Lettie Teague ventured into the natural wine bars of New York City with an open mind and a battery of questions for the bartenders. I’ve had some natural wines that were pleasant and many that were not. So I decided to taste the wines in their natural habitat: natural-wine bars. You can find natural-wine bars all over the world, and New York City—on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, in particular—is a real stronghold. If I was going to get a clearer impression of natural wine and perhaps taste some better wines, these New York neighborhoods seemed like good places to start.
